Merry Wives auditions start tomorrow, Sunday, February 7 at 3:00 p.m., and I am hoping that despite it being Super Bowl Sunday folks will turn out to audition because Shakespeare can be just as fun as the Super Bowl…
An outrageous claim some of you might say, but it’s true!
In Merry Wives, for instance, there are several teams vying for a prize: there’s Falstaff, wanting to get it on with the two Merry Wives: Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Page; there’s Mrs. Page and Mrs. Ford wanting to teach Falstaff a lesson for insulting their honor by even insinuating that they might commit adultery; there’s the jealous Mr. Ford trying to catch Falstaff in the act and protect his name from ever being associated with that of cuckold; there’s three unlikely suitors all desiring the beautiful Anne Page’s hand in marriage; and poor, simple, hilarious Mistress Quickly as go-between amongst them all.
There’s also, like the half-time show (featuring the Who this year, woo-hoo!), Spectacle to be had. Undergarments go flying on at least one occasion, there are outrageous disguises – including some cross-dressing, even fairies put in an appearance!
Which team will you root for? Who will win in the end? Come to auditions on Sunday, so you can find out. We’ll make sure you’re out before kick-off!
Or, if you decide that you just can’t make it tomorrow, come Monday night instead at 6:00 p.m. Come join the fun with bawdy, Billy Shakespeare!
It is rumored among literary historians that Shakespeare wrote the Merry Wives of Windsor at the request of Queen Elizabeth I. She so enjoyed the character of John Falstaff from the Henry IV Part 1 and 2 history plays that she wished to see him in a comedy and in love! Shakespeare obliged on at least half of her wish –
Be a part of this bawdy, hilarious Shakespearean comedy and find out if he followed through on the other half…
